They represent a formal summons to the congregation to engage in an act of collective prayer. The custom of bowing at this point is based on I Chronicles 29:20, "David said to the whole assembly, 'Now bless the LORD your God.' All the assembly blessed the LORD God of their fathers and bowed their heads low to the LORD and the King." The Leader says the following, bowing at "Bless," standing straight at "the LORD." Commentary community. When the Temple stood, sacrifices were offered daily on behalf of the entire Jewish people. Since then, though Jews have been scattered and dispersed, wherever ten gather in prayer it is as if the whole Jewish people were present. The community is a microcosm of the nation.

Commentary SUMMONS TO PRAYER בָּרְכוּ Bless the LORD: An ancient formula (see Nehemiah 9:5) for summoning the congregation to prayer. From this point onward, communal prayer begins. Prayers of special sanctity require a minyan, a quorum of ten adult males. The ten spies who brought back a negative report about the land were called a "congregation." In response to Abraham's prayer about Sodom (Genesis, chapter 18), God assured him that if it contained ten righteous individuals, their merits would save the city. Ten is thus the minimum number to constitute a
