heading THE SHEMA Instructions The Shema should be recited with intense concentration, especially the first two verses in which we accept the sovereignty of God. Recite the first verse aloud, with your right hand covering your eyes. Instructions Do not slur over the ח, but draw it out slightly for the length of time that it takes to affirm God's sovereignty in the seven heavens and on earth—equal to eight, the numerical value of ח. The ד (whose numerical value is four) should be drawn out for the length of time that it takes to reflect that God is alone in His world and that he rules in all four corners of the universe. While reciting the Shema, pause at the commas to convey the following meaning: Hear O Israel (pause), the Lord who is our God (pause) is the one God. See additional laws on page 588.
