Commentary 1 When we say the Amidah, we are considered to be facing God's presence – the holy Divine Presence. Upon concluding the Amidah, we must leave God's presence with respect and humility, as a servant would leave the presence of his master. We begin by taking three steps back, beginning with our (weaker) left foot, showing our reluctance to leave. When bowing before God in reverence, we begin with our left side—God's right side—because that is where God's attribute of kindness is found. 1
Commentary 2 All Jews are like limbs of a single body—connected to each other and incomplete without each other. When one Jew commits a sin, it adversely affects the entire Jewish Nation, just as one unhealthy limb can weaken an entire body. For this reason, we use the collective pronoun "we" during our confession—"We have transgressed, we have betrayed," and so on. In addition to confessing to our own personal sins, we are asking God to forgive the sins of others, which affect the Jewish Nation as a whole. 2 The Arizal
