Commentary 1 The ending of each verse in this prayer can also be translated to mean, "for His kindness is for the world." Human kindness often has motives other than simply helping the recipient. God is complete, and He gains nothing from helping the world. His kindness is, therefore, purely for the sake of the existence of the world. 1 Commentaries
Commentary 2 Prayer was instituted in place of Temple offerings. Just as the offerings caused a fire to descend from heaven onto the Temple altar, so do our prayers cause Godly light to descend from heaven into the world. Unlike in Temple times, however, these revelations are "wonders" to us—they are hidden from us because they are so powerful and lofty that God "alone" perceives them. 2 The Alter Rebbe
Commentary 3 "Earth" corresponds to this world; "water" corresponds to the World to Come. Commandments can only be fulfilled on earth, in this world. In this regard, the verse tells us that "earth" has an advantage "over the water." 3 The Previous Rebbe
