<english>Abaye1 would list the order of the daily service in the Temple. His list was based on the order that the students of the academy had received from their teachers and according to the opinion of the Sage Abba Shaul, who says that all the lamps of the menorah were cleaned before the incense was burned. The list was as follows: The large pile of wood on the altar, upon which they would place offerings, was prepared and arranged before the second, smaller pile of wood that was used for making coals for burning incense. The second pile was arranged before the two logs of wood were added to the large pile mentioned above. Arranging the two logs of wood was done before removing the ashes from the inner altar that was used for burning incense. Removing the ashes from the inner altar was done before cleaning the first five of the menorah's lamps. Cleaning the first five of the menorah's lamps was done before sprinkling the blood of the daily burnt-offering on the outer altar. Sprinkling the blood of the daily burnt-offering on the outer altar was done before cleaning the remaining two lamps of the menorah. Cleaning the remaining two lamps of the menorah was done before burning the incense. Burning the incense on the inner altar was done before placing the limbs of the daily burnt-offering on the outer altar. Placing the limbs of the daily burnt-offering on the outer altar was done before bringing the flour-offering that accompanied the daily burnt-offering. The flour-offering that accompanied the daily burnt-offering was offered before the High Priest's daily offering of pancakes (fried dough). The pancakes were offered before pouring the wine that accompanied the daily burnt-offering. The wine for the daily burnt-offering was poured before bringing the Musaf-offerings—the additional offerings brought on Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh, and festivals. The Shabbat Musaf-offerings were offered before the two spoons of frankincense, which had been removed from the shulchan, were offered on the altar. The spoons of frankincense were offered before the daily burnt-offering that was offered in the late afternoon. We know that the daily burnt-offering of the afternoon was the last offering, because it says in the Torah: The Kohen would place the daily burnt-offering of the morning on the pile of wood on the altar and then burn the fats of the peace-offering on it. Upon doing so, all the other offerings could be completed,2 as long as they were brought before the afternoon burnt-offering (after which nothing else could be offered for the rest of the day).</english>

<text>1 Although Jewish law does not generally follow the opinion of Abaye, we nevertheless read his order of service. In addition to having the merit of reciting a passage of Talmud, we read this excerpt to remind ourselves that even a disputed opinion in Torah is part of Torah. The Talmud relates that a heavenly voice once declared that the contrary opinions of Shamai and Hillel are “both words of the living God.” When Moses asked God whose opinion will be followed in practice, God replied that the matter will be determined by the sages of each generation. We recite these words of Abaye, although disputed, to emphasize that the entire Torah is the “word of the living God.”</text>

<text>2 The sages of the Mishnah taught that the blessings that God gives to the Jewish Nation can only materialize if there is peace. This is hinted at in the order of the Temple service, which could only be “completed” after the burning of the fats of the peace-offering—so called because it brought peace to the world. It was this service that enabled the blessings associated with all the other Temple offerings to materialize and become complete.</text>
