Commentary 1 An eruv is a halachic procedure instituted by the Sages that enables a person to do a specific action in relation to Shabbat that was rabbinically forbidden. There are three main types of eruvim: permitting one to carry objects on Shabbat in an area that was rabbinically forbidden to carry; permitting one to walk on Shabbat a certain distance that would otherwise be rabbinically forbidden; permitting one to prepare food on a Friday that is a festival for the following day—Shabbat, in a way that would otherwise be rabbinically forbidden to prepare. 1
