The Lord passed before Moses and He called out: The Lord is merciful and helps prevent people from sinning. The Lord is merciful and helps people who have sinned to repent. God is merciful and gracious to all of His creations, even if they do not deserve it. God is slow to anger, giving people a chance to repent. God shows much kindness even to those who do not have merits, and is true to His word—to reward those who perform His will. God guards and preserves His kindness for two thousand generations—He remembers the merits of our ancestors, and He is kind to us because of them. God forgives intentional sins. Fulfill the following commandments that I am commanding you today: behold, when you will enter the Land of Israel, I will drive out from before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivvites, and the Jebusites, while the seventh nation, the Girgashites, will leave the land of their own accord. When this happens, watch yourselves, lest you enter a covenant with the occupants of the land into which you are coming. Do not allow them to remain there, lest it be a dangerous trap in your midst, because the people of these nations will ensnare you to abandon the ways of God. Rather, you must demolish their altars, break their monuments, and cut down the trees that they worship. For you shall not bow down before any other god, because the Lord, Who has a name as "the zealous One," is a zealous God to exact payment from those who betray Him. I command you not to enter a covenant with the occupants of the land to allow them to remain, for they will continue to stray after their gods and to offer sacrifices to their gods, and they will call out invitations to you to befriend and join them. Eventually, you will come to eat of their idolatrous sacrifice, until you will eventually take their daughters as wives for your sons.
