The following is the prayer of the prophet Habakkuk for the inadvertent sins of the Jewish Nation in general, and for himself in particular, for having complained to God about perceived injustices: Lord, I heard Your prophecy regarding the upcoming exile, and I became very afraid, for how will the Jewish Nation be able to withstand such a long exile? I pray to you, Lord, and I ask that during the years of exile, keep alive and sustain the Jewish Nation—Your creation. During the years of exile, let it be known that even in Your anger, You remember to be merciful to Your people, as You have promised. God came from Mount Se'ir in the south, where He had offered the Torah to the descendants of Esau, and the Holy One came from Mount Paran in might, where He had offered the Torah to the descendants of Ishmael. Both nations were unwilling to accept the Torah. Then, God came to Mount Sinai to give the Torah to the Jewish Nation; His splendor covered the heavens, and His praise filled the earth. The bright light on that day was as bright as the light that existed during the seven days of creation. Rays of light shone forth from God's hand to His nation, and His hidden strength was revealed there to the Jewish Nation. Death from plague went ahead of Him to fell the Canaanites; fire went forth to destroy them at His feet—as the Jewish Nation approached with the Holy Ark at their head. When the Jewish Nation entered the Land of Israel, the Holy Ark remained in the city of Gilgal for fourteen years until the land was measured and divided among the tribes. God destroyed the nations that were in the land as if just by looking at them. The ancient mountains—the kings of Canaan—were shattered, the everlasting hills—the princes of Canaan—humbly bowed because the ways of the world are His; God decides whom to raise up and whom to bring down. I saw the tents of Cushan, king of Aram, as they became weak, because God sent Otniel son of Knaz to save the Jews from them. When the nation of Midian rose up against the Jews, God sent Gideon to save them, and He caused the curtains of the tents of the land of Midian to tremble. Was God angry with the rivers? Was Your wrath against the rivers when You caused the waters of the Jordan to stop flowing downstream? Was Your fury against the Sea of Reeds when You caused its waters to split? Of course not.
